Dump cakes? Appropriately named I suppose…

Would you eat this?

I certainly wouldn’t. Not in a million years. And for those of you who are just beginning your lifestyle change, I PROMISE you this: YOU WILL ONE DAY LOOK BACK AND THINK TO YOURSELF, “I CAN’T BELIEVE I EVER FOUND THAT APPETIZING!”

When I do my cardio at the gym I like to take advantage of the time and catch up on my reading. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to get myself a new book in the past few days, so today I was on the elliptical and did something I never do during cardio. I turned on the tv. The fitness center where I workout at has individual televisions on every single piece of cardio equipment which is very nice, but I’d rather either just listen to my music and do super high intensity or do an hour of moderate intensity while catching up on my reading. Anyway…

So what did I watch? Well…there wasn’t a whole lot of choices on at the time that I was there. So I turned it on to the Today Show – the Kathy Lee & Hoda hour. I like Kathy Lee & Hoda. They’re very funny and entertaining. But I wasn’t so pleased with one of the guests they had on. Cathy Mitchell. She was making these “dump cakes” and it just disturbed me so much! THIS IS WHAT’S KILLING US! And maybe you think that’s dramatic, but it’s really not. I couldn’t believe what she was putting in these “dump” cakes, or should I say “garbage” cakes. Ha. Dump cakes. Such an appropriate name for something so gross.

PROCESSED…PROCESSED…PROCESSED…

Here’s some of the ingredients contained in these disease causing “dump” cakes:

  • High fructose corn syrup (HFCS)
  • Dextrose
  • Gelatin
  • Artificial flavoring
  • Sugar
  • Emulsifiers (i.e., polyglycerol esters, mono and diglycerides, sodium stearoyl lactylate)
  • Preservatives (i.e., sodium metabisulfite)
  • Oils (vegetable oil, palm oil)
  • Trans fats (partially hydrogenated soybean and cottonseed oils)
  • Enriched flours
  • Reconstituted milk
  • Caramel color
  • Modified food starch

Note: these are only SOME of the awful ingredients in this dreadful dessert. GROSS! Why would you put this in your body? In the beginning of the Today Show segment Kathy Lee makes a statement saying that she can only imagine what this must do to your intestines. I’m thinking…cancer? No way would I do this to my body. And I really, REALLY hope none of you do either. There are so many decadent and delicious recipes out there. And I will be posting a lot!

So…I couldn’t find the Today Show segment on YouTube and I can’t legally (copyright laws) post anything but videos from YouTube or Vimeo. So I am linking to the Today Show segment here. But when I was searching I found this segment on YouTube from the Steve Harvey Show. And I got even more frustrated. Why?

She (Cathy Michell) tried to make it sound healthy!!!

Ugh. I am so irritated. Did you watch the clip? She “dumped” a can of cherry pie filling in, then more canned cherries, then boxed cake mix, then a can of cherry cola and then she actually made the statement “don’t worry ladies there’s no eggs and no oil so no fat in this cake” as if this were a healthy dessert. WHAT? ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? Give me a break. I hope this lady gets her fasting glucose and cholesterol levels checked on a regular basis. Seriously. Holy high fructose corn syrup and trans fatty acids. Did she forget about the trans fats that are in the boxed cake mix? Ugh. You’d be better off just drinking a glass of vegetable oil.

Something my mom said…

I want to share this with you because it made me so happy! For years I tried to get my mom to eat better. YEARS! I constantly told her and still tell other people that tastes change. Your body craves natural, whole, plant-based, real foods. Not the processed junk loaded with chemicals and dyes and other miscellaneous disease causing things that fill the crap most people think of as “delicious food.” I remember telling my mom that I couldn’t understand why fast food restaurants were so popular because to me the food from those places not only looks disgusting but it smells like farts. Yeah, I said it – THAT FOOD SMELLS LIKE FARTS! And the reason it’s so inexpensive is because it’s cheap food (or non-food rather). The meat isn’t all meat. Do you really think that burger is all just beef? Think about it. Gross. I don’t even WANT to think about it. Yuck. And don’t even get me started on how those poor animals were treated. 🙁

But I digress (something I’m very good at)….

So back to what my mom said. She told me that since she made her lifestyle change (it’s been years since she’s been eating clean and several months since she’s been eating a mostly plant-based diet) she doesn’t even crave those gross foods anymore. In fact they seem unappetizing to her. She told me it is exactly like I’ve been saying for years, that her body doesn’t want it and now that her brain has made that realization she craves only the good stuff. Now don’t get me wrong, my mom has a sweet tooth just like me. But HELLO…food doesn’t have to be animal based and full of saturated and/or trans fats and highly processed to taste good. Just the opposite in fact. I will prove it to you. As you will see I will post a lot of very decadent recipes on this blog and of course you shouldn’t over indulge in them – no matter how healthy you still need to keep portions under control when it comes to desserts. But at least you are enjoying delicious treats while still giving your body wholesome nutrition that it can use. WIN WIN!

Okay. Enough with my rant. I was just so annoyed at this. And I don’t mean to take it out on this one lady because there are tons of people out there contributing to the healthcare crisis – the obesity epidemic. It just so happens I saw this today and it struck a nerve.
